Welcome to the Rosedale Rifle Club website
This is the official website of the Rosedale Rifle Club, an affiliate of the Victorian Rifle Association. The Club is the sole occupant of Rosedale Rifle Range which is situated near the town of Rosedale on the Princes Highway 180 km east of Melbourne, Australia.

The purpose of this site is to provide information for intending visitors to this great rifle range, and for people who might be considering joining our Club. Target shooting is a very challenging and enjoyable sport, with a rich history and world-wide participation. It is attractive to all ages, and we welcome both youth and experience - some of the top competitors in our sport are in their seventies.

Some Information About Our Range
Targets
There are 6 target emplacements, and all standard target sizes are available for all ranges. Most targets are manually operated and marked, but three are electronic, which reduces the workload, and provides other useful functions.

Available Ranges
There are raised mounds at 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 and the longest range of 1000 yards has a roof over the mound. All distances are used regularly throughout the season. The terrain is flat apart from a slight depression between the 300 yard mound and the targets.

Active Membership
The Club has about 40 members, and on a normal Saturday we have about 10 shooters, comprising a mixture of F-Class & Sporting Hunter Class (who use scope sights and rests), and Target Rifle (using open sights and slings). Pictured is Target Rifle shooter Ken Tatterson.

Conditions
Because of the flat terrain, mirage can be severe at the longer ranges, and is used extensively as an indicator of wind changes. An effort has been made to keep adjacent trees to a minimum, which increases the reliability of the flags.

Range Clubhouse
The clubhouse was funded and built by local club members in the mid-80s. It has mains power, a well equipped kitchen, toilets and showers, and a large floor area for dining, presentations, meetings and other gatherings.

Camping Area
The area around the clubhouse is sheltered with numerous shade trees. Visitors to our Open Prize Meetings are encouraged to bring a caravan or tent and stay overnight on the range. All sites are powered.
Location Map of the Range
From the centre of Melbourne, Rosedale is a 2 hour drive east, down the Princes Highway. Turn right at the roundabout, drive south for 1.8km, then turn left into the Rosedale-Stradbroke Road. Drive along this road to the first corner (about 1.2km) and instead of following the bitumen road around to the right, go straight ahead onto the gravel road, and the Range gateway is about 800 metres further on the right-hand side of the road.

Current Shooting Categories at Rosedale
Target Rifle
This is the traditional category of shooting, which uses military calibres, open (metal) sights, and slings to support the rifle in the prone shooting position. Nationally, it has the biggest following of any of our categories.

Allowed calibres are .308 Winchester and .223 Remington. There are restrictions on rifle weight, projectiles, trigger weight, sight specifications, and many other aspects such as jackets and mats.

The target rifle category tests a greater variety of shooting skills than F Class (below), and for most, has a longer learning curve. To succeed at the top level requires a very steady hold, and excellent visual acuity.
Standard F-Class
This category is restricted to the same basic rifle as for Target Rifle, but allows the addition of telescopic sights, and front and rear rests. It was introduced as an affordable way of continuing to shoot competitively when having difficulty with open sights and/or prone shooting with a sling. However, there is no requirement to serve an apprenticeship in Target Rifle, and a growing number shooters are preferring to start their target shooting in F-Class.

With the aid of scope sight and rests, the emphasis of shooter skill turns mostly to wind-reading ability. It has been well received at Rosedale, and on a normal club saturday, Standard F-Class shooters are usually well represented.
Open F-Class
This category allows all the advantages of Standard F-Class, and in addition removes most of the restrictions for the rifle. Any calibre up to 8mm is allowable, the rifle weight limit is increased, and the trigger can be much lighter. Consequently, the F-Class Open shooter has a significant advantage, particularly at long range (800 to 1000 yards) and in windy conditions.
F/TR
F/TR is the international equivalent of F-Standard (which is unique to Australia). It is growing steadily in popularity, mostly because it provides an opportunity for international competition (as do Target Rifle and F-Open). Allowed calibres are .308 Winchester and .223 Remington, but without restrictions on projectiles and powder which apply to Target Rifle and F-Standard. And it has significant differences in allowed specifications and accessories to F-Standard.
Other Categories
While the above 4 categories currently comprise all of the regular competitive shooting at Rosedale, we hope this will change over time. There are other types of shooting which are compatible with the facilities, including Field Class, which caters for hunting and similar rifles.
